I don’t like my Boomerang – a fun poem for Sunday

les barker

 Les Barker is an English poet. He is best known for his comedic poetry and parodies of popular songs, however he has also produced some very serious thought-provoking written work.

Les Barker

I don’t like my boomerang.
I know what you’re going to say:
If you hate your boomerang so much
Why don’t you throw it away?
That’s all very well in theory.
It may seem that simple to you.
Why don’t you throw your boomerang away?
‘Cos I threw it away yesterday too.

There are times when life is not easy.
There are days when the future looks black.
There are days when you throw your boomerang away.
There are days when your boomerang comes back.

I believe in predestination;
My boomerang’s future is clear.
On the days that I throw my boomerang away
It’s predestination’s back here.
There are times it gets me down;
Perhaps I shouldn’t let it.
What I can’t understand is this:
How did I ever get it?

Sometimes, when in the front garden
I throw it, then hurry in doors.
Within half an hour, there’s a ring on the bell
And a little boy says: “Is this yours?”
Once I got really angry.
I taped some dynamite to it,
And without really thinking things through,
I lit the fuse and I threw it.

With hindsight, this was an error.
We learn lessons from life; I was taught it
It’s better to think before throwing your boomerang.
Never think after you’ve caught it.
I’ve resorted to desperate measures;
Sometimes when I throw the stick,
I try to move house before it comes back
But you can’t get a mortgage that quick.

I had a Jack Russell terrier once;
I used to call him Jack.
I used to throw my boomerang for him.
The stick used to bring the dog back.
I’ve seen the sticker in car windows;
It gets me right here, like a knife:
A boomerang’s not just for Christmas;
A boomerang is for life.

Sunday Words

I’ve always had a bit of a thing going with words.

I like them. I like writing them, I like reading them, I like playing with them.

Maybe that’s what got me into Hypnosis..

I know that one of the things that got me into words was poetry. In particular a dog eared (yes, I see the irony), battered copy of Old Possums book of practical cats. I fell in love with that book, and during a spell of illness as a child, I learned many of the poems by heart.

Years later the Musical CATS was created and my Aunt took me to see it. I was still young enough to be absolutely enthralled with the magic they had created. Recently Cats has returned, and I frequently see posts on Facebook from friends excited to be going to see it. It has made me quite nostalgic for that first battered copy of poetry and reminded me of the joy I felt when reading those elegant prose as a child.

My very favourite was always Macavity, mostly because of this verse..

Macavity, Macavity, there's no one like Macavity,
He's broken every human law, he breaks the law of gravity.
His powers of levitation would make a fakir stare,
And when you reach the scene of crime--Macavity's not there!
You may seek him in the basement, you may look up in the air--
But I tell you once and once again, Macavity's not there!

 If you’re not familiar with these poems, I strongly urge you to give them a try, and if you have a shy, awkward kid in the family, who’s feeling a bit out of sorts at the moment, you could do a lot worse than finding them a slightly worn out copy to look through….

A little Sunday Haiku

John Coper Clarke is a British performance poet.

When I think of his poems I don’t automatically think of Haiku, but this is one that he wrote which I absolutely love…

 To-con-vey one’s mood
In sev-en-teen syll-able-s
Is ve-ry dif-fic

Have a great Sunday

Still I rise

Maya Angelou was an amazing woman.

She wrote so many inspirational pieces, did so much good, was a friend and role model to so many.

If you don’t know about her, do a little research – trust me it’s worth it.

On of her poems was a piece called Still I rise.

This is just one verse from it, but it gives me goosebumps every time I read it.

You may shoot me with your words,

You may cut me with your eyes,

You may kill me with your hatefulness,

But still, like air, I’ll rise.

If you want to read the full poem it’s definitely worth checking out.

Enjoy your Sunday, and whatever happens this week, be like the air and rise.

Time flies when you’re having Fun

pain management hypnotherapy

It’s Sunday – That lovely day when you have nothing pressing to do…

So why does it go so fast? And why do Mondays last so much longer?

Why does 5 minutes between snoozes on the alarm go by in seconds, but the 5 minutes before your lunch break takes an eternity?

Why does a watched kettle never boil?

Because you can distort time! (aren’t you a clever thing)

We all do it.

The problem is most of us are doing it wrong.

We extend the periods of boredom, of discomfort, of sadness or of pain, and we shorten the times of joy, relaxation, happiness and love.

In hypnosis, time distortion is a regular phenomenon. People often say to me that we’ve only been talking for a few minutes, when often an hour has gone by. This is a trick you can learn. When you are hypnotised your mind is incredibly focussed on one thought, usually the voice of the person who has hypnotised you. That focus is where time goes…it’s like you can’t concentrate on time and be completely focussed on something else. That’s why time can disappear when you are lost in a good book, listening to music, or having a great time with friends.

When you are unhappy, bored or in pain, your focus is often on the time itself…so it gets longer. By willing it to go fast, we extend it further and further until it feels like an eternity.

So, if you want time to pass quickly, STOP focussing on the time and START focussing on something else.

Sometimes that’s easier said than done, but that’s where hypnosis is fantastic. Whether you use self hypnosis or go to a clinical hypnotherapist, that focus can be achieved.

Enjoy what’s left of your weekend – I hope your happy moments last a life time 🙂

Sunday Smiles

It’s Sunday

The work is done

Next week is still too far away to worry about

Take some time to just smile

If hedgehog faces don’t do it for you, find something else that makes you smile

Feel free to share it as a comment

Sunday Dreams

get started hypnotherapy

Do you ever sit there on a Sunday and think ‘Right, Tomorrow is when it all begins!’

Monday is the day you decide to make the change, whether it’s to start the diet, stop drinking, quit smoking, get organised, get fit or any of the other life changing things we promise ourselves we are going to do.

Oh, the things I tell myself I’ll do as soon as the new week starts.

But here’s the thing. Most of the time it doesn’t happen. Monday is a rubbish day to start anything. Most people don’t like Monday mornings, so you’re probably at a low ebb even before you start to make the change. You also see the whole week looming ahead of you and the thought of not being able to eat/drink/smoke/be lazy all week sounds really hard. If you really want to make a change, don’t put it off until Monday – start it today.

If you want to start the diet, throw all the junk food out NOW.

If you want to Stop drinking, poor all the alcohol away NOW.

If you want to quit Smoking, throw the cigarettes away NOW.

If you want to get Organised, grab a pile of whatever it is you need to organise and get on with it.

If you want to get fit, dust off that exercise DVD and get into your gym kit NOW.

What ever it is you want to start on Monday…

Even if you just make a small start then you have already started the ball rolling for next week – you’re not starting from scratch, you’re continuing – and that’s always easier than starting something for the first time. It’s often said that the first step is the hardest, so why not get that out of the way and feel good about it!
