Buggeration

Sir Terry Pratchett has avoided the rush and left without us.

It was announced on his twitter account like so..

“AT LAST, SIR TERRY, WE MUST WALK TOGETHER,” it stated.

“Terry took Death’s arm and followed him through the doors and on to the black desert under the endless night.”

“The End”.

I’m not a big fan of people getting upset when someone they don’t know dies – I feel it’s a bit self indulgent, but I must admit this news has really got to me.

When you are a fan of an author you feel like you get to know them a bit. You feel their sense of humour, their understanding of how the world works, their ‘them’.

I loved everything Sir Terry wrote. The kids books, the Discworld, the historical dramas, the companion books, the diaries – everything. I’m a tragic Discworld nerd and have more related paraphernalia than a self respecting middle aged women should admit to – and I’m transported by it. Transported to a place that started it’s existence in one man’s brain, but which now lives in brains all over the world.

This alone would have made me love and respect Sir Terry, but then he did something else magical. He was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimers. Instead of resting on his laurels and enjoying the time he had left, he became a campaigner. He campaigned for better understanding and support of this devastating illness. He raised money for research so that future others didn’t have to suffer the indignity of this awful disease. He campaigned for the right to die. He did all of this whilst still finding ways to produce more outstanding, inspirational books.

Sir Terry you were, are and always will be an inspiration to me and you will be sadly missed.

Oook

Sir Terry

If you want to honour him, you could do a lot worse than make a donation to the Alzheimer’s society.

If you don’t know him – do yourself a massive favour and get reading.
